Stroud International Textile Festival

The Stroud Five Valleys in Gloucestershire have a long association with cloth production and the influence of the textile industry can be seen on the surrounding landscape and architecture today. One famous local cloth is the very fine Stroud scarlet used to make the ceremonial uniforms of the Brigade of Guards.

Stroud International Textiles continues that story and profiles and champions high quality contemporary textile art and craft experiences locally and nationally.
Part of its ambitious year round programming is an annual festival that takes place every May (1-23 May)

The Randwick Wap

The Randwick Wap is an ancient procession and festival that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was revived in 1972 by the late Reverend Nial Morrison having been halted due to rowdiness in 1892.   The colourful and musical procession of villagers in traditional costume wends its way from the War Memorial to the Mayor's Pool. The procession is lead by the Mop Man who swishes his wet mop to clear the crowds.  During the procession, the Mayor and Queen are carried shoulder high and escorted by an entourage of Flag-boys, Ladies-in-waiting, Cheese-bearers, Princesses, a Sword-bearer and a Flag-man. The Mayor is dunked in the Mayor's Pool before being doused with spring water. The procession continues to the Well Leaze where two Double Gloucester Cheeses are rolled down the steep slope.  After the procession there are bands playing all afternoon, country dancing, stalls, and entertainments, refreshments and something for everyone.

Admission to the Wap is free. There is usually a small charge for car parking & programmes. It starts at 12.45pm on the second Saturday in May. For details email wap@randwick.org.uk

The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling

This is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper's Hill, near Gloucester. It is traditionally by and for the people of Brockworth - the local village, but now people from all over the world take part. The event takes its name from the hill on which it occurs. From the top of the hill a round of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled, and competitors race down the hill after it. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. In theory, competitors are aiming to catch the cheese, but since it has a one second head start and can reach speeds up to 70mph, enough to knock over and injure a spectator, this rarely occurs.

The Stroud Arts Festival

The Stroud Arts Festival was the first major event to put the town on the visitor map, and still does the District proud with its wide selection of cultural activities.  The Arts and Crafts tradition lives on in the creativity which still exists throughout the District. It is a real haven for sculptors, stained- glass artists, masons, writers, painters and a wide range of creative artists.

The annual Site Festival and Open Studios event that takes place every June is a celebration of the diversity of the visual arts in the Stroud district.

Now in its 9th year, the work of over 250 local, national and international artists can be seen. From the garden shed to the converted mill, artists open their doors to the public. Walks and mini bus tours take you around the Valleys to the individual studios.

Visit www.sva.org.uk for more information.

The Stroud Food Festival

The Food and Drink Festival is a two-week celebration showcasing Stroud’s outstanding food businesses. The resulting programme is an interesting mix of new foods, themed events and special promotions. In an era dominated by supermarkets and multinationals, it is easy to lose touch with where your food comes from and who makes it. We are lucky to still have a great range of independent cafes, restaurants, markets, pubs, shops and producers who are part of the lifeblood of the local community. This festival forms part of a successful Shop Local campaign that has been running all year.

Clypping Ceremony, Painswick.

This is held on Feast Sunday, the Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of St Mary (19 September). The church is 'clypped' or embraced by parishioners while the 'Clypping Hymn' is sung. This ceremony is said to symbolise the parishioners' love of their church. This Feast Day was once notorious in Painswick for riotous behaviour and for 'Puppy-dog pies' said to have been baked by a publican desperate for meat to feed the visiting crowds. This is still celebrated by baking china dogs into pies and cakes sold on the day.

St Michael’s Day- Michaelmas

Michaelmas is the feast of St Michael, patron saint of the sea, ships and boatmen.  He is known as the conqueror of the powers of darkness; the Angel who hurled Lucifer down from Heaven. Folklore in Britain has it that the devil landed in bramble bushes, so blackberries should not be picked after Michaelmas.  St Michael is often portrayed as riding a white steed and carrying a three-pronged spear in one hand with a three-cornered shield in the other.  Often confused with the stories about St George defeating the dragon because of the strong theme of good versus evil. Michaelmas also marks the beginning of autumn and a traditional dish at this time of year is goose. We will endeavour to include this on our menu so why not come and celebrate this day by eating at St Michael’s Restaurant.
